Frequently Asked Questions
What is Theater of Kami?
An AI-powered narrative RPG. You step into living worlds, talk to AI characters with memories and motives of their own, and shape the story through conversation.I just want to practice going to a supermarket in a foreign language.
Build exactly that. In the game builder, lay out the store — a produce aisle, a dairy department, a checkout — and add the people you want: a cashier, a stocker, another shopper. A sentence or two of setup is enough; Kami fleshes out the rest. You can even set yourself a quest, like gathering everything for tonight's dinner, or just wander and chat. You steer the cast on the fly, too — tell the cashier to slow down, or nudge a shopper to make small talk, and the character changes its behavior mid-scene. Play in Language-Learning mode with your target language, and every line you say is checked automatically as you go — no need to ask for corrections. And whenever something trips you up, ask the Teacher anything: why a word is used, how to say it more naturally, whatever you need.I'm a complete beginner — won't I just be lost?
No — that's what Gradual Immersion mode is for. It starts you mostly in a language you already speak and folds in more of your target language as you get comfortable, so you ease in instead of being thrown in the deep end. And the Teacher is always there to explain a word, a phrase, or why something is said the way it is.I don't care about learning a language — can I just play?
Absolutely. Language-Learning mode is entirely optional. Leave it off and Theater of Kami is a full narrative RPG in a language you already speak — quests, characters with their own agendas, and choices that carry consequences. And if the day ever comes when you do want to learn a new language — for a trip, a move, or a job — it is already waiting here: no textbooks, no flashcards, just play. Can I create my own characters and worlds?
Yes — it is core to the game. Describe a character in a sentence and Kami brings them to life, with a personality and a way of thinking all their own. Build a whole cast the same way, design the locations they move through, and sketch your own scenario — a line or two is enough, and Kami fills in the rest. Then step in and play it out.How is this different from other AI chat apps?
Those are chat boxes; Theater of Kami is a game, with a dedicated interface to match — quests, an inventory, locations to travel between, items to gather, crafting, and much more. And the rules have teeth: you can't just say "I use my sword to…" when there's no sword in your inventory — the actors will be confused. Fabricate facts during a quest and Kami will punish you: the action fails, and the quest can fail with it. On top of it all, optional language coaching is woven right into play.Do coins expire?
No.How do I buy Game Packs?
Game Packs aren't sold one by one — they all come with your subscription. The entire library is included: every premium setting, with its full cast, locations, art and music. New packs are added regularly and show up automatically, at no extra cost. For as long as you're subscribed, the whole shelf is yours to play.Who is Kami?
Kami is a deus ex machina — “god from the machine.” In Japanese, kami (神) means god or spirit. The phrase “deus ex machina” comes from ancient Greek theater, where a crane called the mechane lowered an actor playing a god onto the stage to intervene and set the story right. And Kami truly is from the machine — she is an AI, running your game with god-like power over every other character: she judges what your actions achieve, issues commands the actors must obey, and bends each scene around what you do. But unlike the lazy plot twist the phrase is often used to mock, Kami never hands you an unearned win — she weighs your actions impartially, by their own logic and cleverness, and she punishes fabrication: assert a fact you never established in the story and the action fails. The story always stays yours to shape — but every outcome has to be earned.
